  • Vehicle tax (road tax): Tax your vehicle at 🌐 www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax. You need your V5C (logbook) reference number. Rates depend on CO2 emissions, fuel type, and list price. Electric vehicles currently pay zero VED (subject to future changes).
  • SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification): If your vehicle is not being used or kept on a public road, declare a SORN at 🌐 www.gov.uk/sorn. This exempts you from vehicle tax and insurance requirements. Free.
  • Tell DVLA you have sold a vehicle: Do this immediately online. You will receive a refund for any full months of remaining vehicle tax.

Essential Travel Tips

  1. Renew your photocard driving licence on time — every 10 years. Driving with an expired licence can result in a £1,000 fine. The DVLA sends a reminder, but do not rely on it reaching you.
  2. Buy train tickets in advance — Advance tickets are released up to 12 weeks before travel and can be up to 80% cheaper than buying on the day. Set up an alert with your train operator.
  3. Claim Delay Repay every time — many passengers do not claim compensation for delayed trains. It is your right, and the process takes a few minutes online.
  4. Book Passenger Assist if you need help — the free service provides staff assistance at stations, ramps, and help boarding and alighting. Available to anyone with a disability, temporary mobility issue, or older passengers.
  5. Use a Railcard — if you travel by train more than a few times a year, a Railcard pays for itself within 2–3 journeys. Digital Railcards on your phone mean you never need to carry the physical card.
  6. Check your MOT expiry date — sign up for free text/email reminders at 🌐 www.gov.uk/mot-reminder. Driving without a valid MOT invalidates your insurance.
  7. Always report a vehicle sale to DVLA immediately — if you do not notify DVLA that you have sold a vehicle, you remain liable for vehicle tax, speeding fines, and parking tickets incurred by the new owner.
