🔀 Split-Ticketing
Stay on the same train but hold multiple tickets for different legs of the journey — completely legal and accepted by all train operators. Can save 40–70% on long-distance routes.
Best split-ticketing sites:
- SplitMyFare — clear interface, no upfront fee.
- TrainSplit — offers flexible “share of savings” pricing.
⏰ Advance Tickets & Peak Times
Advance tickets: Released 12 weeks (around 90 days) ahead and are significantly cheaper than walk-up fares. Seat reservations are usually free with Advance tickets.
Peak hours (most operators):
- Monday–Friday: before 09:30 and 16:00–19:00
- Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak tickets are valid outside these times
- Weekends and bank holidays are typically Off-Peak all day
Cheapest days to travel: Tuesday and Wednesday are consistently cheapest. Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons are most expensive.
🔁 Delay Repay — Claim Compensation
If your train is delayed by 15 minutes or more, you’re entitled to compensation:
- LNER, GWR, Avanti, TPE, Hull Trains, Lumo: 15–29 min = 25% of single fare or 12.5% return | 30–59 min = 50% | 60–119 min = 100% | 120+ min = 100% + free return journey.
- Most other operators: 15–29 min = 25% | 30–59 min = 50% | 60+ min = 100%.
- All claims must be within 28 days of the delayed journey.
- Keep your ticket or booking reference — you’ll need it to claim.
Claim directly through your train operator’s website. National Rail has a Delay Repay portal that redirects you to the correct operator.
