Packing Guide — By Destination & Season

Packing Guide — By Destination & Season

What to pack for every type of trip — from a European city break to a tropical beach holiday. Season-specific lists, tech essentials, and the things most people forget.

🎯 The Golden Rule

Lay out everything you think you need on your bed. Then remove half. Seriously. You don’t need 8 t-shirts for a week — 4–5 is fine (there’s always laundry). Carry-on only saves time at the airport, avoids lost luggage, and forces you to pack light. A 40–45L backpack or cabin-sized wheelie bag (~55 × 40 × 20 cm) is all you need for 90% of trips.

☀️ Summer Europe (City Break or Road Trip)

Item Quantity Notes
T-shirts / light tops 4–5 Cotton or moisture-wicking. One “smart” top for restaurants.
Shorts / skirt / light trousers 2–3 One pair of versatile trousers (e.g., chinos) for churches/evenings.
Comfortable walking shoes 1 pair (on feet) Well-broken-in trainers. Blisters ruin trips.
Sandals / flip-flops 1 pair Lightweight. Pack inside shoes to save space.
Light jacket / cardigan 1 Evenings can get cool — even in Mediterranean summers.
Swimwear 1–2 Even city hotels sometimes have pools.
Sun hat + sunglasses 1 each Essential. Polarised sunglasses better for driving.
Sunscreen SPF 30+ 1 (100ml carry-on limit; larger if checked bag) Buy more at destination if needed.
Reusable water bottle 1 Eurostar/airports have free refill stations. Tap water safe in most of Europe.
Light scarf / sarong 1 Covers shoulders for churches. Beach towel alternative.

❄️ Winter Europe (Christmas Markets, Skiing, Northern Lights)

Item Quantity Notes
Thermal base layers (top + bottom) 2 sets Merino wool — warm, odour-resistant, quick-drying. Uniqlo Heattech is a budget alternative.
Mid-layer (fleece / wool jumper) 2 Key insulation layer. Down gilet packs small and adds warmth.
Waterproof & windproof coat 1 Look for 10,000mm+ waterproof rating. Pit zips for ventilation. Insulated parka for extreme cold (-10°C and below).
Warm trousers / jeans 2 Fleece-lined trousers for very cold destinations.
Waterproof boots 1 pair Gore-Tex or similar. Good grip for icy streets. Break them in before travel.
Warm socks 3–4 pairs Merino wool. Avoid cotton — it holds moisture and makes feet cold.
Gloves, scarf, warm hat 1 each Touchscreen-compatible gloves save removing them for phone use.
Lip balm + hand cream 1 each Cold air + indoor heating = cracked skin and lips.
Hand warmers 2–4 Disposable chemical warmers (£5 for a 10-pack). Reusable gel ones for eco-friendly option.
Sunglasses 1 Snow glare is real, especially if skiing or in the Arctic.

Key principle: Layers. Indoor heating in Europe is strong — you’ll go from -10°C outside to 22°C inside. You need to be able to strip down quickly.

🏖️ Beach Holiday (Tropical / Resort)

Item Quantity Notes
Swimwear 2–3 Wear one, dry the other. Rash vest if snorkelling.
Light cover-up / kaftan 1 For walking to/from the beach or poolside lunch.
Shorts, skirts, sundresses 3–4 Lightweight, quick-dry fabrics.
T-shirts / vests 3–4 No dark colours — they absorb heat.
Flip-flops / sandals 1 pair Waterproof. Reef-safe if possible.
Evening outfit 1 set For dinner. Men: collared shirt + chinos. Women: light dress.
Sun hat 1 Wide-brimmed. Packable (crushable).
Sunscreen SPF 50+ 1 bottle Reef-safe sunscreen for marine environments. Bring enough — resort sunscreen is expensive.
After-sun / aloe vera 1 For when you inevitably miss a spot.
Insect repellent (DEET 50%) 1 Essential for tropical destinations. Mosquitoes carry dengue, Zika, malaria.
Dry bag 1 (5–10L) For boat trips, beach days — keeps phone/wallet dry.
Snorkel mask 1 If you plan to snorkel. Rental masks rarely fit well.

💻 Tech Kit — Universal Packing List

Item Notes
Power bank (max 20,000mAh) Must be in carry-on luggage for flights (not checked). A 20,000mAh bank charges a phone 3–4 times. Anker, INIU, and Belkin are reliable brands (£20–35).
Multi-USB charger One plug that charges 2–4 devices simultaneously. Anker PowerPort or similar (£15–25).
Cable organiser / pouch Keeps all cables tidy. Include: USB-C, Lightning, Micro-USB as needed. 1 long cable (2m) for awkward hotel sockets (£5–10).
Universal travel adapter Type C (EU), Type G (UK), Type A/B (USA), Type I (Aus/NZ). Get an all-in-one with USB ports (£15–25). Skross or OneAdaptr recommended.
Phone + backup Download offline maps + translation languages before leaving. Bring an old phone as backup if your trip depends on it.
Headphones Noise-cancelling for flights. Wired backup for in-flight entertainment (some planes still use 3.5mm jacks).
Kindle / e-reader Battery lasts weeks. Beats carrying 3 paperbacks.

📋 Documents Pouch — Don’t Forget

  • ✅ Passport (photocopy kept separately)
  • ✅ GHIC card
  • ✅ Travel insurance documents (policy number + 24hr emergency number saved in phone)
  • ✅ Printed backup copies of all bookings (hotel, flights, car hire)
  • ✅ Spare passport photos (2–3 — for visas, lost passport replacements)
  • ✅ Driving licence + IDP (if driving abroad)
  • ✅ Vaccination certificates (if required)
  • ✅ Printed address of your accommodation (in local script if applicable — e.g., Japan, Thailand, China)

💊 Medicine & First Aid Kit

  • Prescription meds — in original packaging with copy of prescription + doctor’s letter. Carry in hand luggage.
  • Pain relief: Paracetamol, ibuprofen.
  • Antihistamines: Cetirizine or loratadine (allergies, insect bites).
  • Diarrhoea relief: Loperamide (Imodium) — essential for many destinations.
  • Rehydration sachets: Dioralyte or similar — critical for food poisoning or heat exhaustion.
  • Plasters + blister plasters (Compeed — worth their weight in gold).
  • Antiseptic cream/wipes.
  • Motion sickness tablets: If prone on boats, buses, or winding roads.
  • Any regular medication: Enough for your trip + 3 extra days in case of delays.

❌ What NOT to Pack

  • Valuables / expensive jewellery — makes you a target for theft and you’ll worry about it.
  • Too many shoes — 2 pairs max: one practical (walking), one nice (evening). Shoes are heavy and bulky.
  • Heavy guidebooks — use apps (Google Maps, Visit a City, TripAdvisor). If you must, photocopy or photograph key pages.
  • Hair dryer / straighteners — nearly all hotels and Airbnbs provide hair dryers. If you need straighteners, get dual-voltage ones.
  • Beach towels — most beach resorts and hotels provide them. Use a lightweight Turkish towel (peshtemal) if needed — dries fast, packs flat.
  • “Just in case” outfits — you won’t wear them. If you haven’t worn it in the last month at home, you won’t wear it on holiday.
