Flights from the UK — Book Smart & Airport Guide

How to find the cheapest flights from UK airports, navigate terminals, understand hand luggage rules, and sort airport parking — all in one place.

🔍 Flight Comparison Sites

Site Best For
Google Flights (flights.google.com) Date grid, price tracking alerts, “Explore” map for flexible destinations. Best overall research tool.
Skyscanner (skyscanner.net) “Everywhere” search — find the cheapest destination on any date. Good for spontaneous trips.
Kayak (kayak.co.uk) Hacker Fares (combining two one-way flights on different airlines), price forecasts.
Momondo (momondo.co.uk) Deep OTA search — sometimes finds fares others miss. Good for long-haul.

Golden rule: Use comparison sites to find the best price, then book directly with the airline. You get better customer protection (chargeback rights, easier amendments) and avoid third-party booking fees.

🎒 Hand Luggage Rules

Standard allowance (most full-service airlines — BA, Virgin, TUI, Jet2):

  • 1 cabin bag up to 56 × 45 × 25 cm (including wheels and handles) — typically 10kg max.
  • 1 small personal item (handbag, laptop bag) that fits under the seat in front.

Budget airlines:

  • Ryanair Basic: Only 1 small personal bag (40 × 25 × 20 cm). Add Priority & 2 Cabin Bags (from £6–32 each way) for a 10kg cabin bag.
  • easyJet Standard: 1 cabin bag (45 × 36 × 20 cm, no weight limit if you can lift it unaided). Add a large cabin bag (56 × 45 × 25 cm, 15kg) from £7.99.
  • Wizz Air Basic: 1 small bag (40 × 30 × 20 cm). Add Wizz Priority for a trolley bag.

Liquids rule (all UK airports by June 2026): Most major UK airports have installed next-gen CT scanners and lifted the 100ml liquid restriction. However, always check your specific departure airport’s rules before packing — some smaller airports still enforce the 100ml rule. Containers larger than 100ml may still be rejected at security at airports without the new scanners.

🚗 Airport Parking

Option Price (per day) Notes
Official on-airport (Long Stay) £5–15 Closest to terminal. Book online 4+ weeks ahead for best rates. Heathrow Long Stay T5 from £7.30/day.
Off-airport / Park & Ride £3–8 Purple Parking, Airparks, APH. 10–20 min shuttle bus to terminal. Budget-friendly.
Meet & Greet £8–20 Drop car at terminal, someone parks it for you. Heathrow Meet & Greet from £13/day.
Hotel + Parking packages Variable Often the best value for early-morning flights. Holiday Extras and official airport hotels.

Tip: Train or coach to the airport is often cheaper and faster than parking, especially for Heathrow (Heathrow Express: £25 one-way, 15 min from Paddington; Elizabeth Line: £12.80, 30 min) and Gatwick (Gatwick Express: £18.50, 30 min from Victoria; Southern/Thameslink from £10, 35–45 min).
