Premium Same-Day: £193.50 for adults — available at selected passport offices with an appointment. You receive your passport on the same day.
Photo rules: Digital photo must be taken within the last month — plain cream or light grey background, no smiling, no glasses (unless medically necessary with a signed letter), face covering 29-34mm of the photo.
Key tip: Many countries require at least 6 months validity on your passport beyond your return date. Check before booking travel.

🚆 UK Train Travel — Book, Save & Navigate
Booking platforms: Trainline (trainline.com — £0.75-£1.75 booking fee), National Rail (nationalrail.co.uk — no fee, redirects to operators), and direct operator apps (LNER, Avanti, GWR, CrossCountry) which often have the lowest prices and no fees.
Railcards save 1/3 on most fares — available types: 16-25 (£30/year), 26-30 (£30/year), Two Together (£30 for two named people), Family & Friends (£30), Senior (£30), and Disabled Persons (£20/year). Buy at railcard.co.uk or at any station ticket office.
Split-ticketing can save 40%+ on long journeys. Sites like SplitMyFare and TrainSplit automatically find split-ticket combinations. Legal and accepted by all train operators.
Advance tickets are released 12 weeks ahead and are significantly cheaper than walk-up fares. Peak hours: typically before 09:30 and 16:00-19:00 on weekdays. Off-peak and super off-peak tickets are cheaper.
Delay Repay: Claim compensation if your train is delayed by 15+ minutes — varies by operator (LNER: 15 min = 25%, 30 min = 50%, 60+ min = 100%). Claims within 28 days via operator website.

✈️ Flights from the UK — Book Smart & Airport Guide
Comparison sites: Skyscanner, Google Flights, Kayak, and Momondo. Google Flights has the best date grid and price tracking. Book directly with the airline once you find the best price — avoid third-party OTAs for better customer protection.
Timing: Book 6-8 weeks ahead for short-haul Europe, 3-4 months for long-haul for the best fares. Tuesday and Wednesday departures are typically cheapest.
UK Airports: Heathrow (LHR — Terminals 2-5), Gatwick (LGW — North & South), Manchester (MAN — 3 terminals), Stansted (STN), Luton (LTN), Edinburgh (EDI), Birmingham (BHX), Glasgow (GLA). Check your terminal before travel day — Heathrow Terminal 5 is a 20-minute shuttle from Terminals 2/3.
Hand luggage: Most airlines allow 1 cabin bag up to 56×45×25cm and a small personal item. Ryanair basic fare only allows a small personal bag (40×25×20cm) — add Priority for a cabin bag. Liquids: containers under 100ml in a single clear resealable bag (max 1 litre capacity).
Airport parking: Book in advance — official on-airport parking from £5-10/day, off-airport (Purple Parking, Airparks) from £3-6/day with shuttle. Train to airport often cheaper and faster for Heathrow and Gatwick.

🏥 GHIC — Free & Reduced Healthcare Abroad
The UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) replaced the old EHIC in 2021. It entitles you to medically necessary state-provided healthcare in EU countries and Switzerland at the same cost as locals (often free or heavily reduced).
What it covers: Emergency treatment, treatment for pre-existing conditions, routine maternity care, dialysis, and oxygen therapy. Does NOT cover: Private healthcare, mountain rescue in ski resorts, repatriation to the UK, or planned treatment abroad.
How to apply: Free — apply at nhs.uk/ghic. Takes about 10 minutes. Card arrives within 15 working days. Beware of scam copycat sites that charge £20-50 — the official NHS application is completely free.
Important: The GHIC is NOT a replacement for travel insurance. Always get comprehensive travel insurance alongside your GHIC. The GHIC won’t cover flight cancellations, lost luggage, or private medical care.

🚗 Driving Abroad from the UK — Permits & Rules
International Driving Permit (IDP): You generally don’t need one for EU countries with a UK photocard licence. Countries requiring an IDP include Turkey, UAE, Thailand, Japan, Australia, and many outside Europe. Get one from the Post Office for £5.50 — take your driving licence, a passport photo, and your passport. The 1949 Convention IDP is valid for 12 months.
Vehicle insurance green card: Free from your car insurer — request at least 6 weeks before travel. Proves you have minimum insurance cover. Some countries still require a physical green card even post-Brexit.
Equipment required by country: France: Crit’Air emissions sticker (£4.50 from certificat-air.gouv.fr), warning triangle, reflective jackets, breathalyser (recommended). Spain: two warning triangles, reflective jacket for every occupant, spare bulbs. Germany: warning triangle, first-aid kit, reflective jackets. Italy: warning triangle, reflective jacket.
UK sticker: You now need a UK sticker (not GB) when driving abroad, unless your number plate already shows UK with the Union flag.
