UK Energy Prices & Support Guide
Understanding the energy market, the Ofgem price cap, and available support schemes can save you hundreds of pounds annually.
Ofgem Energy Price Cap
The price cap limits what suppliers can charge per unit of gas and electricity for customers on default (standard variable) tariffs. Reviewed quarterly (January, April, July, October).
- Current cap (July-September 2026): Approximately £1,690/year for a typical household.
- The cap does NOT limit your total bill — it limits the unit rate and standing charge.
Available Support Schemes
- Warm Home Discount: £150 one-off discount for low-income pensioners and some benefit recipients.
- Winter Fuel Payment: £200-£300 for households with someone born before September 1958.
- Cold Weather Payment: £25 per week when temperatures average 0°C or below for 7 consecutive days.
- ECO4 Scheme: Free insulation and heating upgrades for low-income and vulnerable households.
- Great British Insulation Scheme: Single-measure insulation for homes in lower council tax bands.
